- Automatic Number Identification
Transmits billing number of incoming calls.
Adapter
Converts the voice signal to data packets and sends them out
over the internet to a service provider, where they are converted
back and sent to the traditional phone network of the recipient.
Can be purchased from local retail stores or from your provider.
Bandwidth
Amount of data that can be passed along a common channel in
a fixed period of time. It indicates the capacity of your internet
connection to transmit and recieve data. Usually expressed in
terms of bits per second (bps). Broadband

interactive delivery service.
Call Detail Record Information
Downloadable report for a given time period. Details the number
of calls, call duration, origination, destination and billd
amount.
Call Hunting
Calling feature for inbound calls that will roll past a busy
signal or try multiple numbers until the call is answered.
Ethernet Port
The outlet on your system to which you can connect an Ethernet
cable. This connection lets you communicate on a network that
runs TCP/IP.
Find Me/Follow Me
Allows calls to find you wherever you are. Rings several phones
(home, work, cell phone) at the same time.
Firewall
Blocks unwanted network traffic flow into or out of your computer.
IP Telephony
Transmission of voice and fax phone calls over data networks
that use Internet Protocol (IP). Uses only a fraction of digital
telephony's usual bandwidth.
Kilobits Per Second (kbps)
The amount of data that can be transferred in 1 second. The
higher the number of kbps, the more data that can be transferred
at once.
Latency
Amount of time it takes a packet to travel from source to
destination.
Letter of Authorization (LOA)
Authorizes the carrier you select to become your local or
long distance carrier.
PSTN (Public Switched Telephone Network)
Combination of local, long distance and international carriers
that make up the telephone network.
Soft Phone IP
Telephony software that lets users send and receive calls
from nondedicated hardware, such as a PC or Pocket PC device.
Typically used with headset and microphone.
VOIP - Voice Over Internet Protocal
VOIP is phone service over the internet. The sound of voice
is converted into pockets of data, sent acress the internet
and reassembled into sound at the other end of the line. To
make calls subscribers need broadband internet service and
an adapter.
