What
is VOIP?
Voice Over Internet Protocal (VOIP) is broadband phone service
over the internet. The sound of voice is converted into pockets
of data, sent across the internet and reassembled into sound
at the other end of the line. To make calls subscribers need
broadband internet service and an adapter. The person called
can answer on a landline phone. The rates for VOIP plans with
unlimited local and long distance are now $20-$30 per month.
Who saves money with VOIP?
If you already have DSL and spend over $50-60 per month for
local and long distance, VOIP may save you money. Signing
up for the faster, more expensive broadband connection just
to receive VOIP would approximately cost an additional $40
and eliminate any savings. Adding broadband service to VOIP
raises the monthly rate to $60-70, making it a good deal only
for people who make a lot of long distance calls. It is also
a wise idea to keep your landline for emergency calls which
will cost an additional $20 per month.
Why does VOIP cost less than bundled
plans available on landlines?
VOIP offers lower rates because carriers are not required
to pay taxes and access fees that are required on other phone
services.
Are there any fees besides the monthly
fee?
Some carriers charge activation fees and termination fees
of $30-$40. Calls terminating on mobile phones or wireless
devices may be charged additional per-minute rates. Some carriers
charge a monthly fee for additional services like personal
toll free numbers. Some carriers also charge a disconnection
fee as high as $59 if you cancel service within the first
12 months.
What are some of the problems of VOIP?
Currently, 911 service is not available with all VOIP carriers,
a critical issue if you have children of any age or a family
member with health problems. VOIP is also unavailable during
power and internet outages. VOIP is only available with broadband
or DSL; switching to DSL service just to get VOIP will eliminate
your savings. Home security systems and non-voice communication
equipment such as DirectTV and TIVO may not be compatible
or reliable with VOIP.
What do I need to use VOIP?
To make calls subscribers need broadband internet service
(at least 90 Kbps upstream bandwidth), an adapter and your
regular telephone. Your VOIP provider will provide the adapter.
You must have an Ethernet port on your DSL or Cable modem.
What are the bandwidth requirements
to use VOIP?
It is recommended to have bandwidths of at least 90 kbps in
both directions. Telephone service can be obtained below 64
kbps but audio quality may be limited.
Does the computer need to be on at
all times to use the phone?
No, the computer does not have to be on, but broadband does
have to be active.
Can I take my phone adapter with me
when I travel?
You may be able to use VOIP wherever you travel as long as
you have a high-speed internet connection available. It will
work the same as from your home or business.
Can I disconnect phone service and
just plug in the adapter to power all of the phone outlets?
This is not recommended unless you contact a licensed electrician.
You could damage the adapter box.
